Description

Tamsulosin is a drug that is used to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH), such as difficulty urinating (hesitation, dribbling, weak stream, and incomplete bladder emptying), painful urination, and urine frequency and urgency in males. Tamsulosin belongs to the alpha blocker family of drugs. It works by allowing urine to flow freely by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder.

Tamsulosin is available in the form of a capsule that must be swallowed. It’s normally just taken once each day. Tamsulosin should be taken 30 minutes after the same meal every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and if there is anything you don’t understand, ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain it to you. Tamsulosin should be taken exactly as prescribed. Do not take more or less of it, or take it more frequently than your doctor has suggested.

Tamsulosin capsules should be swallowed whole.

Your doctor will likely start you on a low dose of tamsulosin and gradually raise it over two to four weeks.

Tamsulosin may help you manage your problem, but it won’t make it go away. Even if you feel OK, keep taking tamsulosin.
