Salamol Easi-Breathe 100mcg is a salbutamol inhaler (blue inhaler/reliever inhaler). It is breath-actuated, meaning the inhaler releases a puff of salbutamol automatically during inspiration.

This type of breath-actuated inhaler is particularly useful for patients who have difficulty using standard inhalers. Standard inhalers require the user to push down on the end of the inhaler canister at the same time as breathing in. Some people find this coordination difficult and benefit from the automatic triggering from a ‘breath actuated’ inhaler.

In common with other salbutamol inhalers, the Salamol Easi-Breathe inhaler is used to relieve the chest tightness of asthma. It is used as required, with 1 or 2 puffs taken to relieve symptoms for up to 6 hours.

Asthma management
Asthma is usually managed by GPs or specialist asthma nurses and occasionally by specialist hospital chest clinics. Regular asthma clinic reviews are normally carried out at least once a year, and depending on the severity of the breathing problems, sometimes more frequently.

At clinics doctors and nurses review symptoms, inhaler usage, and technique, and assess the need to increase or decrease treatment.

If the occasional use of a salbutamol inhaler, such as Salamol Easi-Breathe, is insufficient to control symptoms, doctors will usually add a steroid inhaler, which may be used regularly or for periods of a few days or weeks at times when symptoms flare up. Inhaled steroid inhaler doses can be increased or decreased as required and can, in more severe cases, be supplemented by steroid tablets. Additional management with long-acting reliever inhalers or tablets that moderate immune responses may also be required.

Most people who suffer from asthma and related breathing conditions have intermittent symptoms, although some patients may experience severe and continuous problems. Most people need to use their inhalers only occasionally when their symptoms flare up. When their symptoms settle or disappear, they may need no treatment at all.

How to use Salamol
Salamol Easi-Breathe 100mcg is used as required, with 1 or 2 puffs inhaled to relieve acute asthma symptoms of chest tightness or wheezing for up to 6 hours. It is breath-actuated and delivers 100mcg of salbutamol into the lungs per breath. You breathe in slowly and steadily to activate the device, which triggers a puff of salbutamol to be released, and continue breathing in after it activates and then hold your breath for 10 seconds after. It is recommended you only use it up to 4 times a day unless needed for an emergency.

Cautions with Salamol Easi-Breathe 100mcg
Patients who experience an increased shortness of breath or chest pain immediately after using a salbutamol inhaler should seek immediate medical advice.

Side effects of Salamol Easi-Breathe 100mcg

The side effects of Salamol Easi-Breathe are the same as other salbutamol inhalers. The most commonly seen side effects tend to occur immediately after inhalers are used and are related to the salbutamol dose (number of puffs), and usually last a few minutes or hours.

The common salbutamol side effects (greater than 1 in 100 people) are headaches, feeling shaky, and dizziness. Less common side effects (less than 1 in 100 people) include muscle cramps, and mouth and throat irritation.

Allergic reactions to Salamol are rare (affects less than 1 in 10,000 people). If wheezing or breathing gets worse straight after taking Salamol stop using it immediately, and tell your doctor as soon as possible.

Alternative salbutamol inhalers
Most people who use asthma inhalers are prescribed standard-metered aerosol inhalers such as Ventolin Evohaler. For most people, this type of inhaler is convenient and less costly.

Salbutamol is also available in other breath-actuated aerosol inhalers with other brand names, and as Ventolin Accuhaler which contains a dry powder and has a lower carbon footprint. A reliever inhaler can usually be used up to 4 times a day.
